SUMMARY:Vision Seminar: Navve Wasserman - Interpreting Visual Representati
 ons in the Human Brain
LOCATION:Columbia Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute\, 3rd Floor\, L3
 -079
DESCRIPTION:Navve will present two recent projects that develop automated
and scalable approaches for discovering and interpreting visual representa
tions in the human brain. BrainExplore (https://navvewas.github.io/BrainEx
plore/) addresses the challenge of searching the vast space of possible vi
sual representations by using data-driven decomposition of fMRI activity t
o discover candidate neural patterns\, identifying the natural images that
most strongly activate them\, and automatically generating and quantitati
vely evaluating natural-language explanations of their visual meaning. Thi
s framework enables large-scale discovery of thousands of interpretable pa
tterns across the visual cortex. Building on the challenge of reliably ide
ntifying what these neural patterns actually represent\, BrainCause (https
 ://yuvalgol123.github.io/BrainCause/) moves from activation-based discover
y toward causal validation: it uses generative models to construct control
led stimuli\, including counterfactual edits and semantic negatives\, to t
est whether a brain region responds specifically to a target visual concep
t rather than to correlated visual or semantic features.\n\nhttps://cail.c
